6A WEDNESDAY, DEC 16, 2009 kound our area SIDNEY HERALD BY DALE W. NAZE EXTENSION AGENT Does your community have a need for a project that you are interested in? Do you think your community can benefit from a project that you have in mind? If you answered yes to one or both of these luestions, the Rural Leadership North Dakota Shortcourse may be just the thing you have been looking for to get your project off the ground. The Rural Leadership North Dakota Shortcourse is an NDSU Extension Ser- vice sponsored program whose purpose is to provide leadership development op- portunities to citizens across western North Dakota and eastern Montana. Participants will have the opportuni- ty to enhance their leadership,effective- ness attributes, learn effective commu- nication skills, understand and manage conflict, understand how people grow/change as leaders and under- stand the importance of service/volun- teerism. All of these learning opportu- nities will be achieved as participants work on their chosen community proj- ect. The RLND Shortcourse program will consist of five sessions that will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST in Watford City. The dates for the sessions are Feb. 2 and 16 and March 2, 16 and 30, 2010. Session topics will include an orienta- tion to discuss your community proj- ect, discuss the RLND program and group activities to enhance networking capabilities; understanding and man- aging conflict; and discussing rural liv- ing topics such as assimilating into small communities, the seven capitals of healthy communities, how to ap- proach people and getting things done in small communities. The RLND Shortcourse is open to anyone in western North Dakota and eastern Montana that desires to be an active learner through project work and who want to work on a community project in which they have an interest and they feel will benefit their commu- nity. The tuition for the RLND Short- course is $250 per participant and in- cludes noon lunches, breaks and all Shortcourse materials. Gov. Brian Schweitzer has announced that the state of Montana will not be printing a state directory this year, saving taxpayers about $20,000. The cost of the 2009 directory was $23,000. The 2010 directory will be available in January online at www.mt.gov. "Just like Montana fami- lies have to make decisions about finances in these times, so does state govern- ment," Schweitzer said. "We will continue to be account- able for every dollar." Rather than print 11,500 copies of the state directory, employees and the public will be asked to use the new and improved online directo- ry and keep their 2009 direc- tory for reference.
