The Sidney Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture -- doing things that most people think just happen. This was a catchy statement making the rounds in the chamber newsletters during the past couple of years. It just says what we in the chamber business were all thinking. We are sometimes so busy promot- ing area and planning events that will bring people to town that we don't do a vm3' good job of letting the general public know what we do. Our membership knows, but those who aren't members sometimes don't realize the depth of our involvement in the community and the area. They think these things "just happen." In the tbllowing months of this column, you'll get a chronological taste of this involvement. For now, I'll focus on what we're doing during the 'Our membership knows, but those who aren't members sometimes don't realize the depth of our involvement in the community and the Sharon Rau Chamber exeutive director last few weeks of the year. Christmas Big Bucks is a program originated in the chamber. 1st Bank, Stockman Bank and the Richland Federal Credit Union all participate. If you need extra spending power for Christmas, you visit one of these places, and go through the application process for $15. $harin' my view Sharon Rau If approved, you'll have Big Bucks worth from $500 to $1,000 to spend in Sidney. They're inter- est free, and you have nine months to pay back the loan. Christmas Cash is in its third year and offers the chance to register in participating Sidney business- es to win $1,500 in Chamber Bucks -- these also spendable only in Sidney. Chamber Bucks are available at the chamber all year long and can be purchased by anyone for anyone. Need a gift or bonus? Think Chamber Bucks. Also spend- able only in Sidney. The Christmas Stroll is five years old this year and grew out of a suggestion by one of our business members. This year's event is Friday from 4- 7:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, the stores will be open, tbod and craft vendors will be on the streets, and the entertainment begins on the outdoor stage. The hugely popular Parade of Lights begins at 8 p.m. fol- lowed by Santa distributing candy in the County Market parking lot, the lighting of the Foundation Tree and the singing of carols around the tree. A great event that draws peo- ple from a large area to kick off the Christmas season. In De- cember, we follow this with the residential lighting contest - get out there and decorate, then nominate your favorite sites with a phone call to the chamber. Happy holidays from all 230 chamber members to each of you.
