IOA SUNDAY, OCT. 5, 2014 Community profile SIDNEY HERALD Not another day at the office: mortician seeks coroner's position BY DEREK JORDAN SIDNEY HERALD Richland County's new- est licensed mortician is also poised to become the county's new coroner. Maggie Gist, a Portland, Ore., native, said she didn't have a clear idea what ca- reer path she wanted to take even when she was in the midst of college. "I was never settled on one subject," said Gist in a re- cent interview at Fulkerson Funeral Home, where she works as a mortician. One thing she said she did know was that the office drone life was not for her. "I knew I didn't want to be stuck behind a cubicle nine-to-five and looking at a screen for most of the time," she said. With an open mind, Gist said she cracked open a book detailing dozens of jobs that would help her avoid that exact fate, when she came upon an entry www.sidneyherald.com DEREK JORDAN I SIDNEY HERALD Maggie Gist is a liscensed mortician in Montana and North Dakota. about morticians, the funeral industry, it's a everything. After attending three years of college in Canada, she transferred school in Cincinnati, earning a bach- elor's in mortuary science before an online job search brought her to Sidney and the Fulkerson Funeral Home in the spring of last year. As a mortician now licensed in both Montana and North Dakota, Gist can oversee most aspects of a funeral service and related activities. "I do all aspects of the business, including meeting with families, conducting funerals and embalming," she said. Since she began this ca- reer, she has grown to love aspects about it that initial- ly made her hesitate "Initially, going into mor- tuary school, I wasn't quite sure that I wanted to be a mortician and funeral direc- tor. I didn't know if I could handle the family side of it, meeting with families," Gist said. Now, she said, her favorite part of the job is meeting and working with the fami- lies and loved ones of the recently deceased. "Seeing their faces light up when they're remember- ing the good times with their loved ones. For me, that's the best part, I could sit and listen to them all day," she said. For more than a year, Gist has also been working as the deputy coroner of Richland County, working alongside outgoing coroner Deputy John Dynneso, who is vy- ing for the sheriff's office in November. Running unopposed to be the next coroner, Gist is looking forward to the duties of the office, which she said include "inves- tigating deaths that were unattended, meaning they were not witnesses by a doctor or not in a hospital or nursing home. We go in and we investigate, trying to determine the cause and manner of death." Working as the coroner will provide Gist with the chance to further pursue her passion for investiga- tion, while at the same time complementing her cur- rent position by allowing her continual contact with friends and family of the recently deceased. "It's one of my loves, to in- vestigate. It's also an expan- sion of my job already, as a mortician. I think it helps that you can be there for a family at the very beginning of things, and hopefully pro- vide answers for them when they don't know things," she said.
