6A SUNDAY, JULY 4, 2004 2 SIDNEY HERALD O "Do you know what ! have?" It's a question I often ask while holding my wife. She knows the answer but still plays my game. "Right now with me?" she questions, coyly We've enacted this love row line many times since a day long ago when a doctor told me I might lose her. Just the thought that I have another opportunity to hold the wom- an I love in my arms is enough to make my day, enabling me to seize that moment and squeeze the life out of it. A woman battling cancer told me of her fears. She was to begin radiation therapy the next week and was dreading it, expecting the worst. Trying to keep her mind off what was ahead, she had beewrun- ning from mall to mall thinking she could shop her way out of de- Reflections spair, but it on fallh wasn't work- ing. Tears had become her R09er Campbdl constant com- panions. She felt like giving up. I told this troubled woman about a minister who had re- ceived the same diagnosis and was headed into the same treatment but hadn't let the prospect get him down. Meanwhile, he had deter- mined to use the present to its fullest, not allowing what might come in the future to rob him of even one day's joy When I next met the cancer patient who had been dread- ing her tomorrows, she was a changed person. Her radiant smile let me know things had turned out better than she had expected. Her radiation treat- ments had not been nearly as difficult as she had thought they would be, and her cancer 'The Lord grants unto us time only in the quantity that we can use it - one moment at a time.'
