SIDNEY HERALD People who believe in Jesus the Christ are currently celebrating the empty tomb. Our God, who has overcome death and the grave, in order that all people can know a new life. While we celebrate we would not be the people God is calling us to be, however, if we fail to acknowledge the many people who are locked in a dark tomb due to mental illness. May is Mental Health awareness month. Unlike other illnesses mental health illness is difficult to see. We can see people who are being treated for cancer and other physical disabilities. SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2019 11A The dark tomb of mental illness But mental health ill- ness hides behind what otherwise appears to be a perfectly healthy individual. Due to this mental health illness is often overlooked. Richland County is a community of indi- vidualistic and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” people. When someone says, “I am depressed,” or acts differently because their brain just doesn’t work like most, that person is often met with resistance and a “just get over it” attitude. This type of response can often encourage the person to feel even more isolated and alone. We would never tell a person with cancer or any other chronic illness, “to just get over it” so why do we do this to indi- viduals with mental illness? Religious words Rev. Audrey Rydbom People who have a men- tal illness need a com- munity for there to be a chance for recovery. One of the best ways to change the stigma of mental illness and to encourage an opportu- nity for recovery is to reduce the stigma. It is important we have hon- est conversations about mental illness and do what we can to ensure there is assistance for those who suffer in darkness. Mental illness is not just a personal problem. Families and communi— ties are affected when a person has a mental illness. Children with a parent or sibling with mental illness might not understand what is happening and at . too young of an age is forced to take on a “par- enting” role for the per- son with mental illness. Without an understand- ing community families suffer alone which may affect the economic and educational Viability of a family For the good of our community people need to be educated about mental illness. Knowledge can reduce the stigma so that those affected are not afraid to seek the treatment needed for recovery. Learn to know the signs of symptoms of mental illness. Learn ways to reach out to people who are suffering. Be an advocate for the voice- less; those who cannot even form the words to express what they are going through to get the help they need. The Richland County Local Advisory Council promotes QPR (Ques— tion, Persuade, Refer) training which is a suicide prevention training once a month and Mental Health First Aid for Youth and Adult quarterly. Both of these train- ings are excellent ways in which you, the aver- age member of Rich- land County can be part of the change needed to decrease the number of mental illness crises in our community. We are a priesthood of all believers with many diverse forms. Together we can roll away the stone that traps those with men- tal illness. We can be the light of hope in the Cartwright St. Michael & All Angels E isco al Check our Web site lor SIDNEY ASSEMBLY or we 414 E.
