SIDNEY HERALD It is possible to be se- cure in uncertain times. This spring the Yel- lowstone and Missouri rivers flooded more land than ever before in the valley, ruin- ing many homes and dreams along with it. Growing beets in the Yellowstone Valley has been certain for nearly 100 years. Until recent negotiations made growing beets less than certain. The irrigation project has been working just fine for many decades. Until a group of envi- ronmentalists decided it was time to take their case to court. Thank- fully, the court ruling prevailed in favor of the farmers over the fish. Dry land farmers have grown wheat in Richland County for well over 100 years. Two years ago, they survived a drought that this re- gion hasn’t experienced in recent memory. Com- bine this with low grain markets and we have some uncertain times for dry land farmers. The local MDU plant recently announced it will be closing down. The two Shopko stores in town announced they will be closing their doors, for good. The coal mine in Savage files for bankruptcy. With all this uncer- tainty how is it possible to be secure? What is a person or a community to do when our way of life as we know it is disap- pearing before our eyes? One response would be for us to throw our hands up in despair. We could worry and fret about what we have lost or will soon loose. But doing this won’t help anyone, nor will it change anything for the better. Another way to re- spond would be to lean into and look to the Lord who is always in Religious words Pastor Paul Turek Religion” control of all things . There is an interesting story in the Old Testa- ment about a time when the nation of Israel was facing an uncertain time. They were about to be attacked by several other nations. Rather than bemoan the fact they were about to be invaded; the king of Is- rael asked all the people to come together to seek help from the Lord. Among other things, the king prays, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you (Lord).” You can read the whole story in the book of the Bible called 2 Chronicles. This story is found in chapter 20. An entire nation is Secure in Uncertain-Times faced with what ap- peared to be certain de- struction at. the hands of their enemies. I don’t want to give away the ending to this story, but I will let you know it turned out way better for the nation of Israel than anyone could have imagined at the time. While we do not have enemy armies poised to invade us, we are living in some very uncertain times. Many of the things we have been certain of for years appears to be very uncertain now How are we to respond to such uncertain times? I would suggest that we call upon the Lord. Now is the time to pray, seeking direction from SUNDAY, MAY 12,2019 6A the Lord who knows all. Now is the time to come together as a commu- nity to work and prayer together like never before. In the uncertain times we are living in we would do well to fol- low the Apostle Paul’s advice — ‘Do not be anx- ious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 4:6-7 We can be secure in uncertain times by looking to and leaning into the Lord Cartwright St. Michael All Angels Episco al “them-com Church,‘ 01-5 2- 9278 or 731-744- 5310, Sun ay wor- ship, 12 .m.
