SIDNEY HERALD I recently watched a classic movie, “Quo Vadis,” and remembered from our Latin classes that that is a question: “Where are you going?” The Super Bowl is upon us, but have you asked, “What’s next? Where do we go from there?” The answer, Of course, is that the next holiday is Valentine’s Day, only 11 days later. It is the great American feast of love. But what do we mean by love? Societally, we associ- ate love with some sort of strong feelings of attraction. The problem here is that we can have strong feelings of attrac- tion for more than one other person at a time. As a result, we struggle Check our Web site for SIDNEY _7\s_srueLv or can 414 E. Main St., Sidney 0 mmwzs Achurch with a heart where the Word of l‘, ‘ a: .5 God comes alive to the hearer. . Sibling heath phenomenon-mamas for a clear defini- tion of the word love. Greek, there are primar- ily three words we translate as love in Rev. Dr. Mark Nicolaus English, The first, and least applicable, is eros, from which we got our word “erotic,” that which appeals to sensu- ality. The second is phileo, which we encounter in the name, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly (Greek, Delphos, broth- er) love. Although broth- , Religious words Qu Vadis erly love is a fine aspect of our many relation- ships, it is not thematic for Valentine’s Day. The third is, agapay, self-sacrificing love which puts the other before self. The begs the question, just what does it mean when someone says, “I just looove ice cream or bratwurst or...? Are you sensually attracted to. . .? I hope not. Do you feel you would a wonderful sibling or friend? I hope not. Are you willing to make huge sacrifices for...? I think not. We might be blessed, then, to turn to a highly qualified writer, we might say inspired, St. Paul perhaps. I Corin. 13 is called the great love chapter, and is requested to be read at many weddings. The chapter, as the whole book, is addressed to a severely divided, quar- relsome congregation, but can be helpful in this conversation. Rather than giving a technical definition, he tells us how love behaves. Verse says, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not ar- rogant or rude. It does not insist on its own‘ way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdo- ing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, SUNDAY, rrs. 3, 2019 I I ’In Greek, there are primarily three words we translate as love in English.’ Rev. Dr. Mark Nicolaus endures all things. Love never ends... So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” One might at this point join Paul in not search- ing for a functional defi- nition, but simply urge that we examine our ongoing relationships, especially with spouse, parents and siblings, to see if the behavior put forth by Paul writing Columnist Cartwright Shwichael All Angels E isc I Church, , or Sunda worship, 12 .m. ev. Valentine’s Day? A made up holiday, per- haps by Hallmark card people. Will there be expensive gifts; flow- ers, candy, jewelry. . .? More importantly, will we work on our rela- tionships, especially at home, to effect the behavior St. Paul urges? What a happy Valen- tine’s Day that would be! B&J HEATING, INC.
