Effective Jan. 11, the inter- est rate paid by veterans on money borrowed on their gov- ernment life insurance policies was five per cent. The old rate of four per cent - in effect more than 24 years -- willcon- finue to appl.v to all loans made before Jan. ll. The interest VA pa,ys on in- surance dividends left to accum- ulate by veterans holding World War II type National Service Life Insurance policies (with a "V'" prefi)was increased from four to 4.25 per cent effective Jan. 1. Dividends left with VA for these NSLI potieies totaled about $283 million at the end of 1970, exceeding by $10 million the amount left with VA at the end of 1969. The higher interest rate paid by VA results from greater in- terest earnings in the NSLI trust fund. About 105,0011 policy loans amounting to nearly $136 mil- lion were made to veterans in 1970. There will be a dispersion sale of 180 stock cow herd Thursday, the BobOl- sons herd northeast of Sidney. We will also have 15 good reg- istered Polled Hereford bred heifers and young cows plus other stock cows and bred heifers. Hog and sheep sales are still on that regular Monday schedule. It is good to report that fat cattle have advanced several dollars and feeder cattle are also stronger. Cows came up several weeks ago and then lost most of that gain. We do expect the cow market to improve in the near future. Looking ahead we will have good runs of cattle each week especially fed calves. They will be the kind for feedlot and also for pasture. Again the goodvol- ume sales are most important to attract those extra buyers. Many buyers have several or- ders and this gives them the op- portunity to fill out loads.
